How can We be Refreshed?

Isaiah 40:30-31

"Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint"
We live in a culture that seeks refreshment by claiming unhealthy options as the ultimate self-care and treating ourselves.

Binging Netflix, indulging in a bottle of wine, eating a tub of ice cream, overspending – all things glorified in our culture as self-care. All those things in moderation aren’t bad, but when we seek refreshment in these things, we won’t find it.

Refreshment comes when we feed the soul. When we take time to connect with Jesus and we find true refreshment.

Our society equates self-care with indulgence, we find ourselves in a cycle of seeking refreshment through temporary pleasures. While enjoying a Netflix binge, getting lost on social media, can bring momentary joy, these activities can mask our deeper needs and leave us feeling empty.

True refreshment is not in these temporary distractions but in nurturing our souls. When we take the time to connect with Jesus, we tap into a wellspring of peace and fulfillment that cannot be found in anything else.

Connecting with Jesus encourages us to engage in practices that truly uplift us—prayer, meditation, reading Scripture, or spending time with other believers. These activities nourish our spirit and provide a sense of purpose and connection that superficial indulgence cannot.

Let’s redefine refreshment. Instead of viewing it as a reward for hard work or a way to escape, we can see it as an opportunity to cultivate our inner lives. By prioritizing spiritual refreshment, we can find the lasting peace and joy that transcends the fleeting pleasures of this world.

Application

Make yourself a plan of refreshment, building in daily habits and weekly opportunities that will bring you closer to Jesus.
