From One Generation to Another

One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.

Psalm 145:4

Do you enjoy it when someone publicly says something nice about you? Picture this, someone stands up with a drink held high and says kind words about how much you mean to them. You may enjoy the kind words in the moment, or you might want to crawl under the table. Either way, it’s a great feeling to be seen, recognized, and appreciated by others. Perhaps you received a thank you note telling you how much of an impact you’ve had on that person’s life. These are the types of things that make your day and cause you to keep going when everything around you may be telling you to give up and quit.

Todays verse from Psalms is really the description of what a Godly legacy is; one generation commending your works, your legacy, and what you left behind to the next generation. This is essentially how you will be remembered; by what you gave your life for. So ask yourself, what are you giving your life for? Do you want to be remembered as a person who gave their life for something greater than themselves?

You rarely, if ever, hear this type of honoring commendation about people who live selfish lives. You never hear this about people who lived greedily, cheated on others, and ultimately lived for themselves. Those who will be remembered forever with great admiration will always be those who lived for others and for a higher purpose.

A legacy is a declaration of what you did with what you were given. You didn’t just do small acts or good deeds with your life, the verse describes that these acts were mighty. They were done with a power, authority and grace beyond your own talent and skill.

You will be known by what you gave your life for.

This is the same thing that Jesus is known for. He gave his life for us so that we could be reconnected and reconciled with a Heavenly Father who deeply loves us and wants to be with us. That was a mighty act which has been declared and commended for thousands of years, and will echo into all of eternity.

The same is true of each of you reading this today. You have an opportunity to live your life, not for personal, selfish gain, but dedicated to leading people to Jesus in whatever way God has called you to do that. You can do this by investing your time, energy, effort, talents and financial resources into helping people find Jesus. That is why you were born, and it’s what you were meant to do from the moment God formed you in the womb. This pursuit is the most important and worthwhile thing you can do with what God has blessed you with. There is nothing else you could do with your life that could be more worthwhile than investing into that which lasts for eternity.

Let’s be people who leave a legacy that declares the mighty acts of God!
