Be Fruitful and Multiply

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!”
Psalm 127:3-5
Children are like arrows in the hand of a warrior. What a wonderful picture these words paint in our mind's eye! We, as parents, have the privilege of positioning and aiming our children to go out into the world and accomplish something amazing for the Lord. An archer has a purpose for each of his arrows, and we as parents, have an opportunity to help our children fulfill the purpose that God uniquely has for each of them. It is a blessing to have a quiver full of arrows!
 
Scripture tells us over and over throughout the Old Testament that the people of God are to "be fruitful and multiply". This wasn't a reference to multiplying your business or planting an orchard, this command was specifically about having a lot of children and training them up in the ways of the Lord. Children are a blessing and they are also the means God will use to accomplish His will on the earth. How wonderful it is that we can be a part of enacting God's plan and expanding the kingdom of God simply by raising up children who will be planted in the local church.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • As a disclaimer, there is not a certain number of children that you must have or should have to be considered holy or pleasing to God. Children in and of themselves are a blessing! That being said, how is this verse challenging you in this new season? What is your motivation to have more children or not?
