The Myth of I
Can't Help it...

1 Corinthians 10:12-13 “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
People can sometimes feel as though they are spiritually drowning in sin. Sin always eventually leads to spiritual death. One lie that a person can believe in any spiral of sin is that there is nothing that can be done about it. There is this myth within all types of addiction that, "I can't help myself" or, "there is nothing that can be done" or, "what's the use of fighting?" This is a lie that the Devil loves for people to believe, because it leaves us powerless to fight back. When we come to a place of saying that there is nothing to be done or that this addiction is just a part of our life now, we spiral and fall even more deeply into the current, with no hope of freedom. The fight is taken out of us and we slip deeper into embracing sin itself. This spiral of shame extinguishes hope and will continue to lead us away from freedom and true lasting peace and joy. If you find yourself in this place, don't for one minute believe that your situation is beyond help or that you cannot once again find freedom from sexual addiction. This is not who you are, and this is not the plan God has for your life. Pornography addiction, like any addiction, often fights to become part of your identity, because if we see it as a part of who we are, we will play the role and fight to keep that part of our life intact and in place. We often believe that we act out of our identity, and our identity is then formed by our actions, but this is not true. The truth is that God forms your identity and his word tells you who you are, then we act out of that true identity. Don't let yourself remain caught in a backwards, counterfeit version of this! Get mad and sin and make a decision that you will fight back!

Galatians 5:1 tells us that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. You are free, but you get to choose to either remain a slave to your sin, or you can choose to live in the freedom that God has for you. Christ hasn't just given you freedom so that you can be free for a short time and then go back into bondage. No, God broke every chain through the cross of Christ so that you could live your entire life in the freedom that only He could provide. We often fight against addiction in our own strength and power, and more times than not, this will always end in failure and bring us right back to where we started, if not worse off. The key here is to lean into the power of Jesus, and in his strength every chain of addiction can be broken. One important key to all of this is confession. You cannot find freedom from something that you won't admit. The Israelites were bound in Egypt, but God never sent a deliverer until the people cried out to him. They needed to become vulnerable and admit their position so that God could step into his role as savior, deliverer, and healer. The same is true for you, but don't just admit it to God. Find a trusted friend or pastor with whom you can share what you are struggling with so you can pray together and get some resources and a plan in place for how to get back on a path to purity. There is power and wisdom in good counsel. This is what small groups and friends are for; to help each other in these exact situations. Don't think for a second that you are alone in this, everyone struggles with lust and wrong thinking, it is just that some that need more help than others and the real strength is to simply admit that you need some help.
