Never be Put
to Shame
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame. For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10:9-13
Romans 10:9-13
The passage above, in chapter ten of Romans, contains two very well-known verses in the Romans Road. If you've never heard of the Romans Road, it is simply an evangelistic tool containing 5 verses in the book of Romans which describe sin, our need for a savior, and how to accept Christ as your Lord and Savior. This devotion, however, is not focused on those two well-known verses, but the lesser known verse (Verse 11) sandwiched between them, which is actually quoting from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah.
The statement is simple, yet profound; so much so that Paul felt the need to remind the early church in Rome of Isaiah's words describing the coming messiah written more than 700 years before Jesus was even born. The verse tells us that anyone who believes in Jesus, the coming messiah, will never be put to shame. Think about that statement for a moment. This does not mean people who have accepted Jesus or who profess Christianity will never experience guilt or shame. In this life, you will experience shame, guilt, regret, negative feelings, or pain from your past on some level. There may be things you've said or done, or perhaps things you haven't said or done that you know you should have. When it comes to verse 11, there is finality in that statement and it points to the culmination of a life. This is a better translation; in the end, or at the end of your life, shame and guilt will not overcome you, or conquer you, because Jesus has overcome your shame, and he has overcome your guilt. When your life is over, it will be said that the blood of Jesus has victory over shame. You do not need to hang your head any longer or live a life of regret, because Jesus has already conquered those things, and no matter what happened in your past, your future is secure in Christ. One of the greatest cures to debilitating guilt or shame in your life is simply to lift your eyes heavenward. Instead of fixing your eyes on what you've done or didn't do, fix them on Jesus, who has conquered and freed you from all shame and offers all of mankind a way of escape.
