- Water baptism is an outward declaration of an inward belief.
- Baptisms happens after salvation.
- It is also symbolic of christians partaking in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.
Water baptism is an outward declaration of an inward belief. It’s a public declaration to family, friends, and the community that you are a follower of Jesus.
Baptisms happen after someone makes Jesus lord and savior of their life. Acts 8:12 says “But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” The New Testament makes it clear that water baptism is a next step for people who at an age of understanding and have made a decision to make Jesus Lord and Savior of their life.
Acts 2:38 says “And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
It is also symbolic of christians partaking in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Romans 6:3-4 illustrates this point by saying “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
Baptism is found throughout the New Testament and was not only a practice for early believers but Jesus himself.
Matthew 3:13-17 “ Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan river to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Getting baptized is for all people who are followers of Jesus.
