Hope for the Heart
Below are some characteristics from Hope for the Heart which navigate stages that you may experience before, during, or after divorce. It is important to identify these stages and characteristics so that you can navigate the right tools to help you in your healing journey.
We know that growth is not always linear and you may experience moving in and out of these stages. Do not be discouraged if you fall back into a stage or if your healing process seems to be taking longer than someone else. We know that God is with you to guide you and to bring you hope right where you are and where he is leading you.

Turbulence Stage
Can include guilt, shame and depression as you are faced with the decision to get divorced and immediately following the divorce. Some processes and emotions include:
- Deliberation
- Decision
- Denial
- Rejection
- Avoidance
- Fear
- Anger
- Depression
- Embarrassment
- Loneliness
Transition Stage
A time to reflect and turn your eyes towards God for help with personal growth and healing. This stage may include the following steps:
- Refusal to dwell on negative thoughts.
- Reflecting on the dynamics of the marriage.
- Recognizing your part and not feeling a sense of guilt.
- Repenting of personal sin.
- Relinquishing any anger or resentment to begin the process of forgiveness.
- Readjust to your new life after divorce.
- Redefine who you are now.
Thriving Stage
A time for deeper, God-centered reflection with prayerful intention of walking through each stage with the Lord. Characteristics include:
- Knowing God cares about your circumstances.
- Knowing God is building your character.
- Knowing that your strength comes from Christ.
- Knowing that you can respond to pain from divorce with wisdom and compassion.
- Knowing that healing takes time.
- Knowing that your future can be positive and filled with joy.
- Knowing that God will use what the enemy meant for evil in your life, for good.
