Love That Makes No Sense

Feb 8, 2026    Ps. Bevan Russell

What drives someone to run into a burning building six times, ultimately sacrificing their life for strangers who could offer nothing in return? This message explores the most radical form of love known to humanity—agape love—the selfless, self-giving love that defines the very nature of God. Drawing from Luke 6, we're confronted with Jesus' revolutionary command to love our enemies, not just those who are easy to love. This isn't about warm feelings or affection; it's about a divine love that moves toward the unworthy, the antagonistic, and even those who actively oppose us. The beauty of this message lies in recognizing that we ourselves were once enemies of God, yet He loved us first. Romans 5 reminds us that while we were still powerless, still sinners, Christ died for us. This is the pattern: Christ first loved, Christ first gave, Christ first sacrificed. We're invited to live in this transformational love and then extend it to others—whether they're our adversaries or simply the vulnerable who can bring us no benefit. The story of a South African village caring for orphaned children demonstrates how agape love creates revolutionary change over time. The question isn't whether this love is possible in our own strength—it isn't. The question is whether we'll daily step into God's love for us and allow it to flow through us to a watching world.
