Method & Substance
"All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.”
Isaiah 54:13
Children can be taught many things in many different ways. They can learn through books, television, social media, stories, their own experience, or by watching others. Some children are verbal learners and others are more visual, but either way, the content of what is being learned is always more important than the method by which it is learned. The method is often neutral; We can learn positive things on Youtube or be exposed to negative things on the same device.
The interesting thing about this verse spoken by the prophet Isaiah is that he declares that the Lord will be both your method and substance of learning. It is learning from God and about God. This is the type of learning that all parents should work to expose their children to. Teach them to pray. Teach them to read God's word. Teach them to listen to the stories of Scripture. In doing this, they will be taught about God, but the instruction will also come from God. This is why God's word is said to be alive and active. It is not a dead book. The stories and principles within it are alive and ready to work in our lives and the lives of our children. The results will be good, and your children's peace will be great. They will have confidence, joy, and fulfillment in their lives when they are taught by the Lord, about the Lord and His mighty works.
